CANNES — The Cannes Film Festival, which wrapped its 63rd edition on Sunday with another lavish, slightly loopy and deliciously chaotic awards ceremony, is one of the last bastions of glamour left in the movie world. But the finely woven fabric of that glamour is fraying, through no fault of the festival itself.

I don’t mean mere celebrity. There is plenty of that here at Cannes, at the Academy Awards, and on every red carpet for every Hollywood premiere. Celebrity has been cheapened by the celebs. You can be one just by being famous — or infamous — and you need not accomplish anything worthwhile to attain that status.

Lindsay Lohan, for example, is a bona fide American celebrity, mostly as a train wreck who has ruined her once-promising talent. She has become an addiction-damaged party skank. Lohan has been doing the yacht party circuit at Cannes 2010 and reportedly had her passport stolen. That meant she failed to show up for court-appointed obligations back in Los Angeles last week because she could not travel without documentation. Loserville. Nothing glamorous or glitzy or beguiling about that kind of repetitive behaviour.
