Napa resident Larry Switzer is looking forward to the day he can hike again without feeling crippling pain in his knees. Last week, the avid hiker underwent double knee joint replacement surgery at Queen of the Valley Medical Center. He expects to resume his normal activities in about five months. 

Switzer knew he could no longer avoid surgery after a two-week vacation in Europe this past July. A day after hiking a coastal trail in northwestern Italy, the 74-year-old could barely use his legs.

“I couldn’t walk the next day,” he said. “I needed support just to go 20 feet.” 

To replace the cartilage that had eroded away behind Switzer’s knee caps, orthopedic surgeon Dr. John Diana recommended a new type of joint replacement surgery using TruMatch Solutions. Queen of the Valley is the only hospital in the North Bay to offer this latest technology.
