Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is an adventure that many people can only dream about, but for Frackville native Lori Mengel Fischer, it was not only a dream come true, but it helped many African children with HIV-positive/AIDS.

A daughter of Roy and Shirley Mengel, Frackville, Fischer and 13 other women hiked Mount Kilimanjaro in early October to raise funds for the American Foundation for Children with AIDS. AFCA is a nonprofit organization that helps HIV-positive/AIDS children and their guardians in sub-Saharan Africa with critical AIDS and related medications, medical equipment and food to its partners.

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is very strenuous, and training is mandatory to be able to successfully get to the top of the 19,340-foot mountain.

Prior to her departure, Fischer trained for months, including weight training, cardiovascular training, hiking, getting used to wearing boots and carrying a pack in order to deal with the rarified air near the top. From the base to the summit, hikers go through five climate zones. Since Pennsylvania has no mountains even close to the height of Kilimanjaro, the team members did the best they could to be ready.
