May 21--Habitat home to be built in June

The first wall will be raised after a brief opening ceremony at 9:30 a.m. June 1 on a new Red River Valley Habitat home to be built by area volunteers as part of an alliance between Habitat for Humanity International and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. The home at 701 N. 24th St. in Grand Forks is scheduled to be ready June 16.

Shoes for Africa surpasses 400 pairs

The "Shoes for Africa" campaign at South Middle School in Grand Forks, organized by 12-year-old twins Yelena and Anna Birt ended up with 413 pair of shoes that will be sent to orphans in South Africa.

The two girls started the drive May 10 with hopes of collecting 100 pairs. Bill Chase, the school counselor who helped the twins, said the girls spent much of Thursday evening collecting boxes to ship the shoes in. He said donations have been coming in to help with shipping costs.

"We've received a couple $200 checks," Chase said. "I think the freight runs about a dollar
