CHICO — Thomas and I have spent our spring weekends exploring the end of Bidwell Park, leaving the car at Horseshoe Lake parking area and heading up Upper Park Road.

With the waters in Big Chico Creek still full with rain and early snow melt, hiking along the Ishi Trail near the water is a refreshing glimpse at park scenery. Up on the Rim Trail, the clear air opens vistas of the Sutter Buttes. Along the middle trails, sunny skies have brought about some great wildflower displays.

Our last hike, about 7. 5 miles, went from the gate at Horseshoe Lake to the end of Upper Park Road and back. Years ago, I had been to this far reach of the park, but since then, I'd forgotten what it looked like. What was at the end of the park road?

Thomas was up for a good long walk, so May 2 we started from the park gate at Horseshoe Lake.

We have been this way before, but always stopped at Bear Hole or Brown's Hole, or approached it from the south on the South Park and Guardian trails.
