I recently wrote about what a private school on the Southside is doing to change the way children look at food. Today, let’s stick with that theme but move to the Northside, a garden in a parking lot and a businessman.

Well, others have called Dan Bradford a businessman. My guess is that he rarely describes himself that way.

The day I met him, he was wearing a Life Is Good T-shirt depicting a “diversified portfolio:” a bike, hiking boots and a kayak paddle.

Bradford is vice president of an Oregon-based software company. But he does his work at home and around the world. So he can live pretty much wherever he wants. And three years ago, he and his wife, Renee, a photographer and makeup artist, decided they’d had enough of Southern California.

They had visited a friend in Jacksonville and, practically on a whim, they decided to move to Springfield.

“It really feels like home now,” he said.

Some of the feeling can be traced to the corner of a parking lot at Eighth and Pearl streets, the vegetables and fruits growing inside a wooden fence with a sign that says: “Community Garden.”
