"Its not called the Death Zone for nothing up there and suddenly it all came home with a vengeance. It was definitely a case of staring death in the face as I tried to pick my way down to advanced base camp avoiding the bodies.

"A few of the world's best climbers have done Everest without oxygen but they are amazing athletes and they go all the way up without oxygen, acclimatising.

"If you use oxygen on your ascent and then are suddenly deprived of it, you are in very serious trouble and the only way you can go is down.

"We had been climbing since 2.30am anyway and I was incredibly tired and that was before the oxygen failed. From that moment it got very serious indeed and I needed to get down as quickly but as safely as possible.

"All you do is want to stop and go to sleep, it was so tempting, but as you pass all the bodies it's a pretty stark reminder that under no circumstances must you stop.

"There is one particular body there which all the climbers know as 'green boots' for obvious reasons. I believe he is an Indian climber from the '90s but he looks as if he just lay down for a rest half an hour ago, he is so well preserved.
