A Little Foot Pampering Goes A Long Way Now That Sandal Season Has Arrived

TORONTO - Come summer, we unleash our feet from boots, free them from enclosed shoes and liberate them from socks.

And how do our feet repay us? Cracked heels and blisters, crops of new corns and calluses and rashes of athlete's foot.

That's because summer's heat and special footwear can be hard on feet. But with a little pampering and attention to basics, you can put your best foot forward for sandal season, foot experts say.

"The feet are ignored. We take advantage of them, we ignore them," says Dr. Kathleen Stone, president of the American Podiatric Medicine Association and a podiatrist — foot specialist — in Glendale, Ariz.

Stone and Stephen Hartman, CEO of the Canadian Federation of Podiatric Medicine, have some advice to offer on how to keep your feet happy in the dog days of summer.

Mix it up:People often have a greater variety of summer shoes than winter ones, says Hartman, a chiropodist in Waterloo, Ont. (Ontario still uses that older term for foot specialists; elsewhere the term podiatrist is the norm. Podiatrists can have more training than chiropodists.)

Ice Cream used to be made with shoe polish? Have you tried?

I know that the anal lubricant I used in the 1950's was made with turpentine. So maybe ice kreem also had a similarly dubious parentage.

Shoe cream vs. shoe polish?

Shoe Polish contains wax and acetone like chemicals to keep it pliable. It will produce a superior shine. The downside or plus side is it clogs the pores of the leather thus adding some water resistance. This of course means it will build up over time and makes it very had to apply leather oils to the leather later on unless removed.

Shoe cream is basically a leather conditioner with lots of dye in it. It will produce a moderate shine after two applications. It contains no wax so it mostly does not hinder leather oils being applied later.

shoe polish doesnt "feed" the leather as well as a cream.

shoe polish will come off more easily than cream when you clean the leather with turpentine.

shoe cream penetrates deeper in the leather.

Shoe cream doesnt give you the sheen a shoe polish will give.

now you can consider using either one or the other or both...
cream + neutral shoe polish for instance?

hope this helps
