When I first started working in the custodial/maintenance department of the Auburn Enlarged City School District back in 1981, there were few guidelines regarding the use of chemicals in public buildings or how they might affect employee or community health. We had floor wax strippers that would eat the glue that held our shoes together. Just think how good that stuff felt when it soaked through socks and into tender little toes. Then there was a bathroom bowl cleaner that would fill the rooms with acidic smoke and fumes if too much was squirted into the water.

Those were just two highlights of the cleaning products we used. I remember one particular primer paint for metal surfaces that would literally take your breath away if you used it in an enclosed space. Come to think of it, the only time I remember using it was in an enclosed space with no ventilation.
