PEKIN, Ill. -

Girls and boys gathered at the Dragon’s Dome in Pekin Sunday for the pageant that would end with the crowning the Marigold Festival’s littlest king and queens.

Family members and spectators clutching cameras filled the room before the start of the 2009 Little Miss & Mister Marigold Pageant, and contestants got last-minute instructions from their parents while practicing their waves and smiles.

Contestant Emily Wolters came to the pageant in a pink dress with white polka dots. “I am having fun today,” she said. “My mom curled my hair, but it didn’t take me long to get ready. I like dressing up. I am 6, almost 7, years old and I go to Jefferson School. I’ll be in second grade this year. I like school, shopping and playing at the parks.”

As the pageant began, coordinator Jackie Montgomery introduced Kadryn Hemmer, who is the lifetime queen. She served as the event’s host, bringing the contestants to the stage at the appropriate time.
