Runners often have growing collections of old shoes in their closets -- too worn out for training but perfectly fine to wear when not working out.
In an effort to help the homelesss and less fortunate (as well as clean out closets), students from C.K. McClatchy High School in Sacramento will be at Monday morning's Buzz Oates No Excuses 5K at Land Park for a shoe collection. (The race starts at 8:30; the shoe pick up booth will probably be manned by 7 a.m.)
Runners can bring any pair of used running shoes to the race, and McClatchy students will send them to organizations that provide services to the homeless. Any tennis shoes or sneakers will be accepted in addition to running trainers. Shoes not accepted: dress shoes, boots, flip-flops, hiking boots, kids' shoes with lights. Also, they do not accept wet or muddy shoes.
Shoes deemed not wearable will be shipped to a recycling facility as part of Nike's Re-Use a Shoe Program. Those shoes will be ground up and used to make all-surface tracks and playgrounds for kids.

This was a sad day. I buried my old girlfriend on this day MAY 25, 2009. I bought this Nike hiking boots in BIG 5 on 1995. This was the year I started customary camping. I went camping for 5 years every summer to Carpenteria seaside San Onfre coast, Kern River, Pyramid Lake, Castaic Lake, Mt. Pinos, Lake Isabella, and Lake Perris all in California.
Then I blocking for 5 years for exclusive reasons. Then I started to go hiking intimate my whore-house in SFV for 2 years. I moved to Vegas then I would hike red shock weekly in the cooler months.
I knew a few months ago I knew my nikes were succeeding to die. I bought new hiking boots last month and I flat It in a few ago. I also use my keens and tevas in the introduce at intervals.
My nikes soles started to divorce for my boots coming down from the angel’s pier hike. I had Cut manage successfully my soles in hi s backpack HAHAHAHAHA. I sketch to consign to oblivion my hiking boots at my camping-ground orientation.

I hiked Philmont for 17 days, rugged terrain trails in August 1993, in a pair of Hi-Tec medium weight, all leather, backpacking boots (Around 100 dollars at that time). I loved them. No problems whatsoever, with a 62 pound (overkill) backpack. No blisters, and they never wore out; just out grew them. I did break them in, of course, prior to the trip.
Everyone else wore the typical light weight, lower priced hiking boots, and they worked for the most part, but not as well as these or other higher end boots; some of my friends did get blisters. It also rained for three days straight and was surprisingly cold, so the trails were muddy; and these held up better than others- stayed dryer and better traction and stability. Hi-tec has newer boot models now, so I would check them out. (I am not really pushing this brand, just telling you what I wore at the time, and they are cheaper than top of the line name brands)
I have since hiked hardcore trails all over the US in two different pairs of expensive Vasque boots (usually top ranked), which I hated, one pair of Merrell medium weight boots, that I liked, and I now use Asolo Powermatic boots ($300), that I love.
It really depends on your budget, but from my experience at Philmont, the trails are well used, and the terrain is not difficult for most people, so you don't need a top of line, heavy duty, Gor-Tex boot. Any descent pair ($70-120) will work fine. Consumer Reports liked Kayland Vertigo High, backpacking boots (under $200), but I have no experience with these. I personally am going to try out Zamberlan Vioz next ($250).
But for an investment and extreme or no trails get the best heavy duty boot you can afford, like the big names of Asolo, Vasque, La Sportiva, Merrel, Zamberlin, Soloman, Scarpa, or Lowa. Just remember, to wear good wool socks, and buy a larger size than a tennis shoe, and break the boots in. Everyone's feet and gape is different.
