The 21st annual First Day Hike at the Blue Hills Reservation in Milton will be this Sunday at 1 p.m.

Prior to the hike at noon, visitors can enjoy free “hot and hearty” soup and hot chocolate around a fire.

Similar hikes will take place across the country and, according to a news release on the America’s State Park website, all 50 states are participating for the first time this year.

“What better way to kick off the new year than with a hike at a state park?” Ruth Coleman, president of the National Association of State Park Directors, said in a statement. “Think of it as the start of a new and healthy lifestyle for the whole family.”

The Milton hikes will be for all ability levels and take between one and two hours. Department of Conservation and Recreation rangers and Friends of Blue Hills volunteers will lead the hikes and warm clothing and sturdy hiking boots are required.
