You would have to be asleep to be unaware that lately, leggings are everywhere. They have popped up in traditional forms and cuts as well as more imaginative adaptations (baggy leggings, anyone?). Leggings have been reincarnated with stirrups, in latex, with ruching, in neon, with shine, in matte, both longer and shorter. It seems that there are no rules when it comes to this pant/stocking hybrid that was once reserved for gym-goers and pregnant women. Except. For. One. There is one rule when it comes to wearing leggings, one rule that was so patently broken this past weekend at the Moose’s Tooth, that it merits firm reiteration: SPANDEX PANTS ARE NOT LEGGINGS. You know those pants that are leggings, but aren’t because they are, well, spandex pants? Do not wear those as if they are leggings. It doesn’t matter if you are 5’11”, 115 lbs with a Gisele Bundchen face and a Heidi Klum butt. A $5,000 purse dangling from your arm will not mitigate wearing spandex as pants, nor will a 5 karat diamond ring or a haircut Blake Lively would kill for because it’s that much better than hers. The ONLY thing that compliments, excuses, or in any other way de-horrible-izes wearing spandex as pants is a bicycle. Underneath you. Which you are are currently pedaling. If you don’t have a bike and you are sporting spandex, you better be hiking, running, or on the way to or from the gym with footwear and other attire that says “I’m working out” or that you are on your way to or from so doing.
