Q: When I was fishing on South Fork of the Boise River last month, I’m almost positive I saw some “didymo” on rocks along the bank.

It was like I thought I saw on the South Island of New Zealand.

A: Didymo, aka “rock snot,” has been identified along the South Fork of the Boise River for a number of years, according to the Idaho Department of Fish and Game.

Biologists cannot say for sure if it is native to the drainage, or has appeared in the last 10 to 15 years.

Didymosphenia geminata (the full name) is a diatom (algae) thought to be native to North America. It is spreading from its former range in northern latitude, low-nutrient rivers, but why this change is occurring is not clearly understood, said Art Butts, Fish and Game southwest area fisheries biologist.
